I was introduced to the joys of camping at a very young age, with family holidays in bright canvas frame tents. In 1972 we went up-market when Mum and Dad bought our first caravan – a beautiful (now legendary) Lynton Javelin Executive, which was crammed with us 5 kids and Nan in the awning! I continued this love of the outdoors with my own family and my 2 boys were brought up on tent holidays
Fast forward to 2015 … My car just happened to come with a towbar and I began to think this needed to be used. Started looking for older caravans for sale, mainly because of my budget, but chickened out as I had never towed anything and it was too scary. Then on eBay I saw a folding caravan. Remembered seeing them on our travels in Cornwall with our Lynton in the 70s and Dad joking ‘Look – there’s half a caravan!’ This seemed the ideal solution – the towing height of a trailer, but everything you need inside when put up. At Vintage Nostalgia show I found a very original little late 70s French Casita with funky 70s interior for sale and bought it. It’s had a few problems over the years (long story!) and is not so easy to put up now without help, but I still have it. His last RCC rally was Apple Orchard in 2018, but I hope to have him back in circulation with a bit of work
In 2019, after pressure from my sisters to ‘get a proper caravan’, I bought my much-loved little 10ft 1973 Ace Airstream, complete with a bonus Poulard awning and is a regular sight at RCC rallies and festivals and also my everyday holiday caravan. Completely original with a few additions to give a really bright 1973 timewarp feel and tidy up the exterior. I have quite a collection of 1973 memorabilia (many thanks to sister Julie boot sale finds!) and a range of 70s toys and games
I first found RCC in 2017 when the club exhibited at Newbury Retrofestival. Julie and I were tenting with the legendary Archie Fox, as both our caravans were not quite ready to roll. We were blown away by the lovely old caravans and great, friendly, fun people and decided to join the club. The next year we were there for our first RCC event, enjoying the company and the attention of visitors admiring our caravans. I love being part of this club and taking part in as many club rallies as possible, which are always fun with great company. I also display my little caravan at events like Retrofestival and Somerset Festival of Transport, which has become a regular fixture for RCC members. It’s lovely to see the interest of the public, chat and hear the memories our caravans bring back for them. My 70s toys are always popular and I enjoy dressing up in 60s and 70s fashion
I recently retired after 30 years in further education, so have a bit more time to spare now and am really looking forward to getting more involved in the Club. Hopefully my organisational skills, admin, finance and management background will make me a useful Committee member
